CURRICULUM VITAE

 

 

THOMAS EBENSTEIN was born in Carinthia/Austria in 1979. He received vocal training from Helena Łazarska at the Vienna University of Music and Dramatic Arts and is still coached by her. Graduation with honours in 2004. He also studied German Lied with Robert Holl.

In 2001 he won the International Antonin Dvořak Competition in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), in 2003 the Musica Juventutis Competition at the Vienna Konzerthaus, in 2005 the International Heinrich Strecker Competition in Baden near Vienna and in 2007 the Richard-Wagner-Grant in Bayreuth.

 

The young tenor has made guest appearances at the Theater an der Wien - KlangBogen festival conducted by Alfred Eschwé & Placido Domingo (Lehár: The Count of Luxemburg - Armand Brissard) and conducted by Bertrand de Billy (Beethoven: Fidelio - 1st prisoner), the Vienna Volksoper (Lehár: The Count of Luxemburg - Armand Brissard), the Stadttheater Baden, the festival Mozart in Reinsberg (Mozart: The Magic Flute - Monostatos), the Schlossfestspiele Langenlois near Vienna (J. Strauß: The Bat - Alfred), the Carinthian Summer Festival, the Wiener Festwochen (Verdi: Aida - Un messaggero), the Salzburg Easter Festival conducted by Sir Simon Rattle (Beethoven: Fidelio - 1st Prisoner), the Theater Dortmund (Rimski-Korsakow: The Golden Cockerel - Prince Gwidon), the Bochum RUHRtriennale conducted by Marc Minkowski (Mozart: Magic Flute · 1st Priest), the Ostseefestspiele Stralsund (Bernstein: West Side Story - Tony), the Bergen International Festival in Norway (Mozart: The Abduction from the Seraglio - Pedrillo) and the Hong Kong Arts Festival conducted by Kirill Petrenko (Lehár: The Merry Widow - St. Brioche).

Future Engagements include in 2009 again the Schlossfestspiele Langenlois (Zeller: The Bird seller – Adam).

 

Since 2004 THOMAS EBENSTEIN has been a member of the Berlin Komische Oper (among other roles he sang Mozart: Don Giovanni - Don Ottavio, Mozart: The Abduction from the Seraglio - Pedrillo, Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro - Basilio, Mozart: The Magic Flute - Monostatos, Beethoven: Fidelio · Jacquino, Offenbach: The Tales of Hoffmann - Andreas/Cochenille/Franz/Pitichinaccio, R. Strauss: The Cavalier of the Rose - Valzacchi, Weill: Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny - Jack O'Brien, Berg: Wozzeck – Andres; J. Strauß: The Bat – Alfred, Lehár: The Land of Smiles - Gustl, Porter: Kiss me, Kate – Paul, Sondheim: Sweeney Todd - Tobias).
The 2008/09 season will see him in new roles such as
  Schwemmer: Robin Hood – Daniel [world premiere],
  Tschaikowskij: Pique Dame – Tschekalinskij,
  Gluck: Armide – Artémidore and
  Künneke: The Cousin from Nowhere - Roderich.

As a company member THOMAS EBENSTEIN has worked with a number of prestigious producers such as Andreas Homoki, Calixto Bieto, Willy Decker, Richard Jones, Peter Konwitschny, Barrie Kosky and Hans Neuenfels.

 

In addition, the Austrian Tenor performs Lieder (collaborating particularly with his accompanist David Lutz) and sacred vocal music, both at home (including the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Klagenfurt Konzerthaus, the St.Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna and the Festspielhaus St. Pölten) and abroad (the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Pomeranian Philharmonic Bydgoszcz) conducted by Erwin Ortner and Helmuth Rilling amongst others.
